Poll: Most agree with Holder contempt -- think it's politics

A new poll finds a slim majority of Americans agree with the U.S. House decision last month to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress -- but even more think Republicans are playing politics.A CNN/ORC International survey released Monday says that 53% of respondents approve of the GOP-run House contempt vote against Holder regarding a document dispute over the "Fast and Furious" gun-smuggling investigation.
But 61% also said that House Republicans are trying to gain a political advantage through the investigation and contempt citation, while 34% believe the GOP has real ethical concerns.
Also worth noting: 31% don't know who Attorney General Holder is.
Naturally, responses tend to fall along party lines -- as they often do in these kinds of cases.
CNN polling director Keating Holland said public opinion in the Holder matter "is identical to what it was when the shoe was on the other foot."
He added: "In 2007, when House Democrats were investigating the dismissal of eight U.S. attorneys and the administration of Republican President George W. Bush was claiming executive privilege, Americans felt that the Republicans should answer all questions and that the Democrats were just trying to gain political advantage."
